ART-165: Typography I

3 credit hours

Typography is the study of letters and letterforms and how they communicate and carry the content of a written or graphic design work. Students will be introduced to the history of the letterforms around them and in their practice. We will work on class exercises exploring the basic tools of proper typesetting and design: working with leading, kerning, and proper type practices in order to set type in an expressive way on projects such as posters, illustrations, and creating their own typefaces. Students will learn to use typography in both display and body copy sensibilities for intended effect. This course can be used to satisfy University Studies requirements.
