ARTH-245: Introduction to Western Art

3 credit hours

This course surveys the history of art from the prehistoric era to the twentieth century. It is designed to familiarize students with the major artistic developments within the Western academic tradition; to build their understanding of the key terms, themes, and concepts used in visual analysis and interpretation; and to improve their verbal reasoning, speaking, and writing abilities. Class lectures, discussions, and assignments focus on using relevant vocabulary such as the formal elements and principles of design to examine visual images of artworks and connect specific characteristics to their historical context and corresponding period style. This course can be used to satisfy University Studies requirements.
