ARTH-252: Modern through Contemporary Art

3 credit hours

This course surveys the history of art from the mid-nineteenth century to the late twentieth century. It is designed to familiarize students with the major artistic developments within the Western academic tradition; to build their understanding of the key terms, themes, and concepts used in visual analysis and interpretation; and to improve their verbal reasoning, speaking, and writing abilities. Class lectures, discussions, and assignments focus on applying relevant vocabulary such as the formal elements and principles of design to visual images of artworks, and connecting specific characteristics to their historical context and period/style. This course can be used to satisfy University Studies requirements.
