Middle Grades Program
The program of preparation for the Bachelor of Science in Education in Middle Grades, and for the initial certificate for teaching, requires a minimum of 120 hours. This includes a University Studies component, a professional preparation component, and electives.
Students may choose a single subject middle school teaching major with 30 hours of content area from the majors below. A second option is to choose a dual major certification requiring forty-eight hours of credit, distributed between two middle grades teaching fields. These may be earned through the University Studies requirements and electives. Choices for the one or two teaching fields may be made from the following:
- English/Communications
- Mathematics
- Social and Behavioral Sciences
- Science
Students are required to participate in 200 hours of field-based service learning activities that are conducted in public or parochial schools. At least half of these hours must be in diverse settings, including one with special needs students.
In the clinical experience/student teaching, candidates spend approximately half of the total 14 weeks in classrooms for each of the two teaching fields.
