Health Science
The Kosair Charities College of Health and Natural Sciences faculty and staff are excited to welcome students into our community of learners that are interested in the Bachelor of Science in Health Science (BSHS) program. This program offers students an interdisciplinary approach to study health sciences, health and wellness at the individual, group, and population levels, and explore health behaviors and quality of life concerns. The curriculum is based on a strong foundation in the health sciences. The BSHS degree is designed for students to complete an undergraduate education that is enriching, both personally and academically. The BSHS program prides itself on offering a high quality education and professional development opportunities for students. Students who earn a BSHS degree have successfully completed the pre-requisite requirements for many of the graduate programs here at Spalding University, including occupational therapy, athletic training, and nursing. Students earning a Bachelor of Science in Health Science (BSHS) degree have many options for degree completion based upon his/her overall career objectives.
The Bachelor of Science Health Science program is designed for students whose career goal is to work in health systems or organizations providing health related or human services to individuals, groups, and communities. The BSHS program is a four year, 120-credit curriculum consisting of the undergraduate work to enter graduate programs at Spalding University, as well as to serve students who which to enter health careers at the undergraduate degree level. The BSHS program includes students interested in a career in occupational therapy, athletic training, nursing, and other health related careers. The health science major provides the opportunity for students to learn foundation skills necessary to succeed in the dynamic health environment.
The BSHS degree program of study includes core health science courses including prerequisite coursework for the Kosair College of Health and Natural Sciences graduate programs in occupational therapy, athletic training, and nursing.
COURSEWORK:
University Studies:
In the BSHS program, students complete a combination of university courses and electives as well as the core health science courses. Spalding University requires all undergraduate students to fulfill a specific number of credit hours in the humanities, natural sciences and mathematics, social sciences, religious studies, and communication. These general education requirements comprise the University Studies component for all undergraduate degree programs. For the BSHS degree, 55 hours constitute the University Studies component of the program of study. Required University of Studies Courses for all undergraduate students at Spalding University include: US 100, ENG 109, ENG 110, COM 201, and MATH 113. For the BSHS degree program the additional required University Studies Courses are: PHIL 154, BIO 261, CHEM 106, SOC 101 or ANTH 211, PSY 103. As a part of the required Universities Studies Courses, BSHS students must complete the following minimum number of hours in these required disciplines: 3 hours in Communications or Foreign Language, 3 hours in Fine Arts/Theater Arts, 3 hours in either Creative Writing, Fine Arts, Linguistics, Literature or Philosophy, 3 hours in Literature, 6 hours in Religious Studies, 3 hours in History
Required Support Courses:
Beyond these prescribed minimum hours in University Studies courses, an additional number of Required Support Courses of 8 hours in math and science make up the BSHS degree program of study. These math and science courses consist of math and science knowledge for successful problem solving within dynamic health care environments and provide the scientific problem solving skills within the BSHS degree. The Required Support Courses include: BIO 262, BIO 264, BIO 301 and MATH 231.
Health Science Core Courses:
Students pursuing a BSHS degree have required core health science courses that focus on a survey of health professions, research for evidence based practice, health and wellness, anatomical correlates for health care practice, neuroscience, and medical terminology. These required health sciences courses provide the students with skills capacities for working within health care agencies and organizations. The required health sciences core courses make up 18 hours of the BSHS program of study. The Health Sciences Core Courses include: HS 300, HS 301, HS 320, HS 325, and HS 410.
Health Sciences and General Electives:
The BSHS degree program provides a student with a variety of options of elective courses within health science, professional health science program courses, math, science, communication and psychology. The BSHS program of study has 39 hours of electives that can be used to complete the BSHS degree program. The elective hours of can be in any health science, humanities, social science, English, Religious Studies, Math or Science course. A student may use MSAT, OT or NURS courses as electives within the BSHS degree. Credit hours in BIO, CHEM, MATH or PHYS beyond the specific program of study courses can count as electives, additional hours of PSY can count as BSHS program of studies free electives. RS 366 and SOC 360 are especially suited as free electives within the BSHS degree program.
