This course offers an overview of social work as a helping profession within the social welfare umbrella by exploring the profession's knowledge, values, and skills. Students will become familiar with noted figures in social work's history, explore various forms of social work practice in a variety of settings, and identify opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with other professions. The course emphasizes social work's social justice roots, varied career paths and fields of practice in the profession, licensure and regulation, education requirements, and factors essential to the selection of social work as a career. Special attention is given to global, multicultural, and diversity aspects of social work as a profession. Open to non-social work majors.
