This knowledge base course is designed to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills needed to conduct, evaluate, and utilize empirically based research. The course provides a foundation of research knowledge that enables students to gain a more in-depth understanding of research as conducted and utilized in all system levels of the human services field. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies are examined with particular attention to using research for decision-making and the advancement of the profession. The course focuses on conceptualization, question formulation, measurement, instrument construction, research design, data collection, and sampling. Special attention is given to ethical and diversity issues associated with conducting applied research. It is expected that students will develop an awareness of personal attitudes and values and become informed consumers of proven principles and valid empirical evidence. The course will foster an awareness and sensitivity for social work practice with diverse groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and disability.
