This is the foundational, first course in a series of four forensic-emphasis courses. This course provides an overview of the forensic psychology field as well as the unique ethical issues it presents. Forensic psychology is a subfield of psychology wherein basic and applied psychological science or scientifically-oriented professional practice is applied to the legal system. Forensic psychology primarily focuses on pre-adjudicative processes with deference to the law and the judicial process. The objectives of this course are to: (1) explore the differences between conducting clinical and forensic evaluations; (2) provide an overview of legal systems and processes; (3) introduce students to basic criminal, civil and family court laws relevant to various legal questions;  (4) highlight relevant case law for practitioners; and (5), begin the formation of forensic writing and testimonial skills.
