In this course, we will explore leadership, human rights, and social justice concepts by examining leaders in grassroots organizations, corporations, and public office. We will then consider how these leaders, with differing leadership styles, uphold or derail Americans’ access to basic human rights and social justice. For this class, Human Rights equates to “the basic rights that should be accessible to ALL humans such as (but not limited to) the right to food/water, shelter/housing, and freedom from discrimination.” Social justice is the equitable distribution of wealth, privileges, and opportunities for everyone. The topic of advocacy for human rights and social justice as it applies to Spalding and the broader Louisville community will serve as the final analysis for this course, which will also prepare students to recognize social problems and systemic disenfranchisement. Students will complete this class with an understanding of and appreciation for ways to exist in community with each other at Spalding and in their professional careers.
