Secondary Education

The program of preparation for the Bachelor of Science in Education in Secondary Programs, and for the initial certificate for teaching requires a minimum of 120 hours. This includes a University Studies component, a professional preparation component, and areas of academic emphasis.

Areas of academic emphasis courses may be selected from one of the following teaching certification fields of study:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Social Studies

Students are required to participate in 200 hours of field-based service learning activities that are conducted in public or parochial schools. At least half of these hours must be in diverse settings, including one with special needs students. In the clinical experience/student teaching, candidates will spend fourteen weeks in a co-teaching, secondary school setting in collaboration with a certified teacher.
