Communication

The School of Communication is engaged in the community, our award-winning faculty and students have been a vital part of Spalding for over three decades. In the School, you will find courses range from the study of public relations and social media to digital multimedia media, organizational communication, intercultural communication and leadership communication.

With an on-campus radio station and a multi-media technology lab, you will have many opportunities for hands-on learning. Our students work with top employers in the area for internships such as Brown Forman, the Kentucky Derby Festival, WHAS 11, and Greater Louisville, Inc. to name a few. Spalding University’s School of Communication prepares you to walk your education into the marketplace.

Communication Majors

Business Communication:
Business Communication addresses communication strategies and leadership in professional contexts. Students apply theories of conflict and crisis communication, interviewing, small group and team communication, and sensitivity to gender and cultural issues in the marketplace. The major prepares students for careers in corporate leadership, training and development, organizational decision-making, crisis communication, event planning, and public relations to name a few.

Media Studies:
Media Studies is an innovative, creative area of study that gives students a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Course of study includes digital multimedia, blogging, story boarding, online communication, media classes, digital and video portfolios. These skills, in combination with foundational communication classes, prepare students to compete and lead in the marketplace.

Communication Studies:
Communication Studies offers students the opportunity to design a unique plan of study. This major optimizes opportunities for students seeking a specific marketplace niche. Students collaborate with advisors to design a program beyond required departmental courses. Course selection is crafted in line with the student’s professional goals.

Additional Minor Options for Communication Majors
Students in Communication can add a minor from another discipline. Potential minors include Business Administration, Marketing, Psychology, and Liberal Studies.

Accelerated B.A./ Master’s of Science in Business Communication
The School of Communication at Spalding University invites undergraduate communication majors to begin a Master of Science in Business Communication (MSBC) degree as undergraduates. This early admissions process allows high achieving undergraduate students to earn nine graduate credits (3 classes) as undergraduate students.

Communication Minors
Minors in Communication require 18 semester hours in COM (excluding COM 201). Three Communication minors are: Business Communication, Media Studies, and Communication Studies. Many students in Business Administration, Psychology, and other disciplines choose to minor in Communication.
