NURS-626: Informatics and the Principles of Evidence Based Practice

This course helps the student integrate nursing science, computer science and information sciences to manage and communicate data, information knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. In this course, information literacy, the use of computers in health care, and the utilization of the electronic health record are explored. Students will learn the process for selection and evaluation of information systems and patient care technology. Use of technology to analyze outcomes and examine patterns is emphasized. Information based systems; decision support systems and web-based learning are discussed as a mechanism to improve patient care.
The course also reviews types of evidence to support practice. The student will learn levels of evidence and application to practice situations. Discussion of best practices and how they are determined will be discussed.
