Undergraduate Student Awards
Alice L. Vardiman Award
The purpose of this award is to recognize a graduating senior nursing student who has demonstrated competencies in positive communication with clients, colleagues, and faculty, in creating an atmosphere of trust, and in professional behaviors emphasizing dignity, integrity, and human caring reflective of the life and work of Alice L. Vardiman, former associate professor in the School of Nursing.
Auerbach Occupational Therapy Academic Scholarship Award
This award recognizes the outstanding academic scholarship of a student and is named in honor of Dr. S. Pearson Auerbach who significantly assisted in the establishment of the Auerbach School of Occupational Therapy Program.
School of Education Leadership Award
This award is presented to an undergraduate in an education program who exemplifies the mission of the School of Education and the concept of teacher as leader through service to the Spalding community, area schools, and the Louisville community. In addition, the recipient must demonstrate exceptional scholarship and a professional demeanor.
Henry Clay Award
This award testifies to excellence in scholarship. It is awarded to the graduating senior in business administration who holds the overall high GPA in the School of Business.
Donna Faquir Service Learning Award
The purpose of this award, named to honor Donna Faquir, is to recognize a graduating nursing student who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to community service through a minimum of forty hours of service learning activities.
Dolores F. Smith Humanitarian Award in Nursing
This award recognizes a senior nursing student who has demonstrated, in a special way, the mission and values of the School of Nursing as reflected in the life and work of Dolores F. Smith, MSN, MA Ed, Ed.S, RN, Emeritus Professor of Nursing.
Humanitarian Award in Nursing
This award recognizes a junior or senior nursing student who has demonstrated, in a special way, the values inherent in the mission and philosophy of the School of Nursing.
The Louise Kannapell Award
Louise Kannapell was a beloved and scholarly teacher of English at Spalding for over 40 years. The Louise Kannapell Award is given to an outstanding undergraduate by vote of the faculty of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. It honors a senior who gives evidence of intellectual achievement and integrity, aesthetic sensitivity, leadership, concern for others, and generosity of spirit.
Dr. Marylee King Award
This award is given to a graduating undergraduate major in religious studies who demonstrates the academic excellence exemplified by Dr. Marylee King, SCN, whose scholarship greatly influenced hundreds of students during her more than 20 years of service at Spalding.
The Mother Rose Meagher Senior Award
For more than a quarter of a century, this award has been presented to a graduating senior of Spalding University. Named for Mother Rose Meagher, the Mother Superior of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth at the time when Spalding was founded, the award recognizes a senior who satisfies the following criteria:
- Student has an acceptable scholastic record;
- Student has demonstrated qualities of maturity, judgment, and interest in scholastic and co-curricular affairs;
- Student possesses the ability to achieve harmonious human relations; and
- Student shows promise of becoming a worthy member of his or her chosen profession and an asset to the community.
Occupational Therapy Professional Accountability Award
This award is presented to the graduating occupational therapy student who best exemplifies the program's model of professional accountability in academic and fieldwork practice.
The O'Leary Award
Named after Sister Mary Adeline O'Leary, one of the founding members of Spalding and a nationally known research chemist, this award honors an outstanding senior in the School of Natural Science who gives evidence of intellectual achievement, leadership, personal integrity, and commitment to service.
Overseas Universities Scholarship Awards
The English-Speaking Union (Kentucky Branch) each year awards Overseas Universities Scholarship Awards to students for summer study in Great Britain. Eligible for nomination for this award are full-time juniors or seniors who are majors in interdisciplinary humanities or interdisciplinary social sciences and who have the academic preparation and scholastic record indicating fitness for study abroad.
Sister Agnes Miriam Payne, S.C.N. Award
Named in honor of the second chairperson of Spalding's Nursing Department, this award recognizes an outstanding senior nursing student who has demonstrated qualities of maturity, creativity, and leadership in nursing and has contributed service to church, community and the University.
Louree Pottinger Award
This award recognizes an outstanding registered nurse graduate who has demonstrated self-direction, commitment to life long learning, and professional activities in nursing that characterized the life and work of Louree Pottinger, RN, an outstanding leader in nursing in Kentucky.
M. Trueheart Titzl Award
This award recognizes the outstanding graduating senior in social work. The recipient shall have demonstrated an excellent academic record and potential for significant contributions to the social work profession. The award is named for Mary Trueheart Titzl, a nationally known social work educator who taught for many years at Spalding.
Sister Agnes Lucile Raley Distinguished Undergraduate Student Award
The purpose of this award is to recognize a graduating senior in psychology, who has established a record of distinction in scholarship, professionalism and community service. The award honors the memory of Agnes Lucile Raley, SCN, who founded the psychology program at Spalding, and was one of Kentucky's most prominent psychologists.
Sister Catherine Mary Zollner, S.C.N Leadership Award
Named in honor of Sr. Catherine Mary Zollner, former Administrator of Our Lady of Peace Hospital (now Caritas Peace Center), this award recognizes a junior or senior nursing student who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership in health and nursing practice of Sr. Catherine Mary Zollner, SCN. This award has been established by the Medical Staff of Caritas Peace Center.
Sister Mary Ransom Burke Award
Named for the founder of the communication program at Spalding, this award is given to an outstanding undergraduate by vote of the faculty of the School of Communication. It honors a senior who has a superior academic record and has made significant contributions to the school, university, and community.
Caring With Dignity Undergraduate Award
This award was established by the faculty of the School of Nursing to recognize the commitment to the principles of human dignity, ethics, and caring in nursing, which was the hallmark of the tenure of Brother Ignatius Perkins, OP, D.N.Sc., M.A.Ed., R.N., K.H.S., F.A.A.N., former chair of the School of Nursing and Dean of the College of Health and Natural Sciences.
Social Justice Award
For the undergraduate social work student who evidences both courage and exemplary work in advocacy and community organizing.
Transformational Learner Award
The undergraduate social work student who thrived and grew in notable ways through the social work educational process.
