EDD-904: Understanding and Using Data
In this course, the student integrates the fundamentals of scientific methodology, increases his or her knowledge and application of qualitative research methods, extends his or her experience with conducting literature reviews and acquires quantitative skills in measurement and statistical evaluation. The student applies these skills by reviewing, evaluating and communicating results of other scholars’ and the student’s own research. This course emphasizes understanding organizational data. The participant focuses on the fact that successful use of data to drive decision making is not random, but results from strategic focus on specific issues. In addition to learning how to distinguish, employ and calculate descriptive, qualitative and quantitative statistics, the student learns how to analyze market data, polls, dashboards and financial data. During this course, a representative of at least one community partnering organization will present an issue with which that organization is dealing so that interested students who choose to do so may focus on one of these issues for their dissertation research.
