Offers students an elective seminar to develop both knowledge of and confidence in working with persons touched by HIV. Foundation work covers the natural history of HIV, testing and confidentiality, epidemiology, transmission and risk, medical management, and current research questions, as well as policy issues such as financing, workplace concerns, and service delivery strategies. Prevention and alternative forms of HIV education are considered. The course explores psychosocial, legal, spiritual, and cultural experiences of those touched by HIV. Students apply their professional Codes of Ethics to situations presented. Extensive use of guest lecturers. Note: This course is approved by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health Services, Department for Health Services, AIDS Education Program, as meeting the requirements of KRS 214.610. Open to non-social work majors.
