After successfully participating in the ENG624 residency, students begin ENG625: Independent Study: Emphasizing the Long Project in Professional Writing. The student and assigned faculty mentor create an Independent Study Plan that creates assignments that familiarize the student with different modes of professional writing and also include assignments that reflect the student’s professional goals. These assignments may focus on workplace writing in the non-profit, corporate or government sectors, including but not limited to promotional materials, grants and other proposals, scripts for educational, historical, or promotional videos or podcasts, speeches, press communications, as well as other assignments determined in conversation with the student’s mentor. During the independent study, students submit five packets to their mentors, at scheduled intervals, containing a cover letter, a specified amount of material that includes new and revised work, and short rhetorical analyses of select models of professional writing. The mentor replies to each student packet on an individual basis, providing critique and instruction to the student in a written or recorded response. The coursework for ENG625 culminates with the presentation of the long project portfolio. Students who have made satisfactory progress but wish more time to finalize their projects may enroll in ENG627. Students submit midsession and end-of-independent-study evaluations, and a cumulative bibliography of books and scripts read.

Prerequisites: ENG-624 and permission of Chair or Associate Programs Director.
