This course traces the Black intellectual experience as it manifests on American college campuses. This trend began with the establishment of the first Black Studies department at San Francisco State University in 1968. The course chronicles the vital history of the academic discipline while also highlighting the various theories, expectations, nomenclature, and practices associated with the discipline. Political and social theories are examined via primary and secondary sources common within the discipline. This course also introduces students to epistemologies and methodologies of the discipline. The interdisciplinary approach to this course surveys key political, economic, cultural, and philosophical tendencies of African American Studies. This course can be used to satisfy University Studies requirements. (Meets University Studies Requirement for Social Sciences)
