The Age of Discovery laid the groundwork for the Fine Arts as we encounter them in museums and galleries today.  Simultaneously, the ideas and wealth that culminated in the Enlightenment were deeply entangled in the colonizing exploits and economic transformations whose consequences similarly reverberate to this day.  This course examines the flourishing of painting, sculpture, and printmaking as the creative expressions of individual artists against this historical backdrop.  Students will follow artists as they probe the limits of reason and depths of emotion, and respond to the demand for luxury and grandeur alongside the experience of suffering and inequity. This course can be used to satisfy University Studies requirements.
