Middle Grades Program
The program of preparation for the Bachelor of Science in Education, Middle Grades, and for the initial certificate for teaching, requires a minimum of 120 hours. This includes a University Studies component, a professional preparation component, and area(s) of academic emphasis.
Students may choose a single subject middle school teaching major with 30 hours of content area from the majors below. A second option is to choose a dual major certification requiring 48 hours of credit, distributed between two middle grades teaching fields. These may be earned through the University Studies requirements and electives. Choices for the one or two teaching fields may be made from the following:
- English/Communications
- Mathematics
- Social and Behavioral Sciences
- Science
Students are required to successfully complete a minimum of 200 field experience hours in assigned school settings. At least half of these hours must be in diverse settings, including one with special needs students. If the student pursues a dual major, he or she will spend approximately half of the required experience in each of the two major academic areas of concentration.
Candidates will spend 14 weeks co-teaching (student teaching) in an appropriate school setting, in collaboration with a certified teacher. If the student pursues a dual major, he or she will spend approximately half of the co-teaching requirement in each of the two major academic areas of concentration.
