Secondary Education Programs
The program of preparation for the Bachelor of Science in Education, Secondary Education, and for the initial certificate for teaching requires a minimum of 120 hours. This includes a University Studies component, a professional preparation component, and area(s) of academic emphasis.
Areas of academic emphasis courses may be selected from one of the following teaching certification fields of study:
- English
- Mathematics
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Social Studies
Students are required to successfully complete a minimum of 200 field experience hours in assigned school settings. At least half of these hours must be in diverse settings, including one with special needs students. If the student pursues a dual major, he or she will spend approximately half of the required experience in each of the two major academic areas of concentration.
Candidates will spend 14 weeks co-teaching (student teaching) in an appropriate school setting, in collaboration with a certified teacher. If the student pursues a dual major, he or she will spend approximately half of the co-teaching requirement in each of the two major academic areas of concentration.
