COM-255: Critical Media Studies
3 credit hours
In this course, students will become more active, effective, and critical consumers of media and culture by
exploring theories in media and cultural studies. Students will then apply these theories to their interests and
lived experiences through written and oral presentations. Students will complete the class with a better
understanding of how the media constructs how we conceive of personal and social identity (eg., gender, race,
ethnicity, class, and sexuality). The course will also guide students through analytical strategies that can be
used to evaluate communication media, history, structure, regulation, policy, and impact upon society. This
course can be used to satisfy University Studies requirements.
