PSY-807: Dementia Presentations and Capacity Evaluation
3 credit hours
An overview of common behavioral symptoms typical of major neurocognitive disorders will be discussed with an emphasis on behavior management and assessment of functional impairment domains. Students will learn to integrate social, medical, psychiatric, cognitive, and functional assessments to help clarify patient capacity to engage in higher-order decision-making. Capacity evaluations will include medical, sexual consent, financial, testamentary, driving, and independent living decision-making for older adults suspected to lack capacity in a given domain. Ethics, legal considerations, and diversity components will also be explored.
